the great transmission
The Great Transmission is an award-winning 2016 documentary film produced by Guna Foundation. It explores the history and the journey of Buddhism as it spread from India into Tibet, and finally to the United States across 2,500 years. I assisted in the post-production stage by creating masks for errors in individual frames and providing translation for the Japanese subtitles of the film. I also provided the designs for the DVD packaging, scene selection UI, promotional materials including posters and postcards, the educational tab for the website, and the electronic newsletter.
The Poster/DVD Cover Design
In Tibetan Buddhism, "transmission" is the act of faithfully and accurately passing down the Buddha's complete teachings from master to disciple. The two monks putting their heads together as featured on the movie poster and the DVD cover symbolizes this sacred act. By the Nyingma tradition, Tibet's oldest school of Buddhism which Guna Foundation has faithfully documented, no disfiguring, cropping, or laying of texts and objects on top of figures was allowed. Our goal in the design process was to respect and uphold these centuries-old tradition and sense of beauty while broadening appeal to a modern and non-Tibetan audience. We incorporated the Himalayan mountains in the background, as mountains are an integral feature of Tibetan landscape and traditional paintings, with monks traveling over them which also alluded to the theme of transmission in a more literal sense.
Provided design for the addition of the "For Educators" tab in order to ensure a stream-lined navigation experience with the rest of the site, which was designed by John Jascovski.
